What Is Biology?
From the smallest cells to the largest ecosystems known to humanity, biology helps us understand life itself. Through biology, we can better comprehend the mysteries of the living world, including our own bodies and the countless organisms that share our planet.
Studying biology can turn curiosity about the natural world into valuable scientific skills. Through research, observation and analysis, you can build knowledge that applies to fields such as healthcare, education, biotechnology and environmental science.
Recent Trends in Biology
New technologies are changing how scientists study living systems and solve complex problems. Advances in biotechnology, genetics and bioinformatics are expanding possibilities in areas such as healthcare and scientific research.
Biology also plays an important role in addressing environmental challenges, sustainability and food production. As the field evolves, professionals increasingly combine biological knowledge with technology and data-driven approaches.

Course Stackability
We want our students to get the most out of their hard work. That’s why we design our courses and programs with stackability in mind. Some courses can be applied toward a micro-credential or certificate, which can in turn be applied toward a master’s degree. That master’s degree coursework could then be applied toward a doctorate. Even by taking a single course at ACE, you're taking a smart step toward a larger educational future.
Related Degrees
The courses you take in this skill area can earn you academic credit that you can apply to these ACE degrees.
Course Admissions
For students taking single courses without enrolling in a program, admission requirements will depend on the level of the course. Students must meet ACE’s general admission requirements and be admitted to the college before signing up for a stand-alone class.
Bachelor’s Level
- At least 30 semester credits
- Minimum GPA of 1.75
Master’s Level
- A bachelor’s or highest post-baccalaureate degree
- Minimum GPA of 2.5*
Doctoral Level
- A master’s or doctoral degree
- Minimum GPA of 3.0
*Applicants whose overall GPA is between 2.0-2.49 may be considered for admission if their degree was conferred more than 10 years from the start date at ACE or the applicant has five or more years of experience in the field appropriate for intended courses.
Biology FAQs
What topics are covered in a biology course?
Topics vary depending on the course, but biology courses may explore areas such as cell biology, genetics, evolution, ecology, anatomy, physiology and the diversity of living organisms. More advanced biological science courses may focus on specialized subjects such as microbiology, molecular biology or environmental science.
Can I take a biology course online?
Yes. An online biology course can provide a flexible way to strengthen your scientific knowledge while balancing work and other responsibilities. American College of Education (ACE) offers online courses designed with working professionals in mind, allowing students to complete coursework without regularly traveling to a campus.
Who should take biological science courses?
Biological science courses can benefit educators, healthcare professionals and others who want to strengthen their understanding of life sciences. They may also be useful for professionals seeking additional academic credit, developing subject-area expertise or preparing for further education. Course requirements and the value of individual courses toward a particular career or credential can vary.
Why are biology skills valuable?
Biology develops skills that extend beyond understanding living organisms. Studying biology can strengthen critical thinking, scientific literacy, research, data analysis and problem-solving abilities. These skills can be applied in fields such as education, healthcare, research, biotechnology and environmental science.
