Education Licensure Information for Maryland

You could complete an initial teacher licensure program from ACE and apply it to Maryland’s out-of-state licensure requirements to obtain your Elementary Education (1-6), Secondary (7-12) or Generic Special Education PreK-12 educator license in Maryland.

ACE accepts applicable content exams for our licensure program admission requirements. Applicability is determined by ACE upon review.

You must satisfy additional requirements, including:

• Completion of an approved teacher preparation program in any state through an accredited institution is required.
• Passing an approved reading instruction assessment, if applying for elementary or generic special education (any grade band)
• One of the following:

1. Passing a portfolio-based performance assessment or
2. Achieving an effective rating on a year-end evaluation if employed by a Maryland local school system, Maryland-operated school or Maryland special education school
3. Being eligible to hold a standard professional-level out-of-state teaching certificate

Upon conferral of your ACE program, provide the Verification of Completion form to [email protected] for completion.

You could complete ACE’s M.Ed. in Educational Leadership or Certificate in Principal Preparation (if you already possess a master’s degree) and apply it to Maryland’s out-of-state licensure requirements to obtain your Supervisor of Instruction, Assistant Principal, and Principal license in Maryland.

You must satisfy additional requirements, including:

• An approved out-of-state program that leads to licensure as a supervisor of instruction, assistant principal, or principal, and includes a supervised clinical practicum.
• Holding a master’s degree
• 27 months of effective teaching performance or effective performance as a licensed specialist
• Three semester hours of State-approved Continuing Professional Development (CPD) credits in special education coursework
• A qualifying score on the School Leaders Licensure Assessment
