Bachelor’s Degree in Education FAQs

What can you do with a bachelor’s degree in education?

A bachelor’s degree in education is key to obtaining many jobs in the field of education, such as academic advisor, program coordinator, instructional support specialist, community engagement coordinator, educational assistant and more. Even for roles that may not technically require a bachelor’s degree, like paraeducator, employers may prefer one.

How long does it take to earn a bachelor’s in education online?

Bachelor’s degrees typically take four years to complete. Some online bachelor’s programs may offer acceleration pathways that allow you to complete the degree faster. If you already have some undergraduate academic credits, such as from an associate degree, you can reduce the time it takes for you to finish your bachelor’s. ACE’s bachelor’s degree completion programs can be completed in as little as 12 months.1

Is a bachelor’s in education required to become a teacher?

To become a teacher, you must have a bachelor’s-level education but your bachelor’s degree does not necessarily have to be in education (although it is helpful). If you have a bachelor’s degree in another area and want to become a teacher, your next step is typically to pursue a master’s in education so you have the necessary knowledge, skills and prerequisites needed to earn your teaching license.

How much does a bachelor’s in education cost?

Based on 2025-2026 data, the average annual in-state tuition and fees for a bachelor’s degree at a public, four-year university is $11,950,2 putting the average total cost at $47,800. The same numbers for out-of-state tuition and fees come to $31,880,2 for an average total cost of $127,520.

For a more affordable path to a bachelor’s degree in education, many students elect to first earn academic credits or an associate degree through a two-year college. They then transfer those credits into a bachelor’s-completion program. ACE’s bachelor’s degree completion programs have a total cost of $8,370.3

Does a bachelor’s in education guarantee teacher licensure?

No, it does not. A bachelor’s in education can help you become eligible for licensure, but there are often other state-specific requirements you must meet before you can get teacher licensure. This includes things like passing exams and background checks. Your state’s department of education is the best resource for finding complete information on teacher licensure requirements.
